December 7 (Anniversary of Pearl Harbor, 1941) – Bing Crosby & David Bowie – The Little Drummer Boy / Peace On Earth

Heard this yesterday at Home Depot. I’m not doing Christmas shopping much right now because broke isn’t a good way to do the holidays, so I’m missing out on a lot of the holiday overload, but I had to buy some stuff for the theatre where I work. This song came up just as I hit the register.

Somehow, it seems fitting, considering the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor bombings that launched us into World War II.

It is easily my favorite version of the songs, sung in counterpoint. For some backstory, check out the Wikipedia article on the subject.

I know Bing Crosby had issues with his kids, and David Bowie wasn’t wild about the musical selection, but consider this: It is an historic convergence of two seriously disparate musical generations. Somehow, it has stuck around over 30 years, which to my mind makes it every bit the classic it is.
