Fortunately, I have the complete vinyl set (the CD leaves pieces out) and vinyl – digital transfer equipment, so eventually I’ll have all my favorite wacky pieces available whenever I want them.
When I was a kid, my favorite radio station was the now-defunct WAXC — AM classic Top 40 radio at its finest. When the station switched format to all religion all the time, I moved to WCMF (classic rock), but it was never quite the same, except…
Dr. Demento played late night on the Westwood One Radio Network.
First time I heard it, I was hooked. 1978, in my first year of high school, I was prime audience material for the show, and I stuck with it all the way till I got to my second year in college, when I shipped off to New Paltz and had to leave the good Dr. behind.
But not before “Poppies, poppies, poppies…” became firmly embedded in my grey matter.
And so we begin Dr. Demento Week. Not with “Weird Al” (though he will show up sometime later this week, he was only part of the overall Dr. D. experience), but with Kip Addotta, and two of my all-time favorite pun-filled pieces.
In 1986, when I moved to the DC area, I also attended my first World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon), in Atlanta, GA. A group of us drove to and from the con in convoy mode, with (I think) two CB radios for easy communication. One of us ran in front of the four-vehicle convoy, and the other brought up the rear.
The two radios (as I recall) belonged to me and my friend Marty Gear, who died suddenly a few weeks ago. Vampire and White Rabbit, Tan Van, and the fourth car, which I’ve since forgotten, were on the road some 14 hours straight from one point to the other.
On the way home, punchy from general lack of sleep and the late night, I recall engaging in (if not instigating) a fish-based pun war, thanks in part to Addotta’s work. I’ve since forgotten most of the events of that con, but not the drive home.
I have no idea how many truckers or other drivers were involved, but I do know it expanded well beyond our two radios. Kept us going for at least an hour on the road.
Another Spit-Take warning from your friendly neighborhood video pusher. How to give PBS that extra edge? Pull out the super powers, that’s how.
Unexpected Crossover Week comes to an end tomorrow with a cross between superheroes and seriously bad puns, leading to…well…that would ruin the surprise, wouldn’t it?
This one might command a “swallow first” before playing it. Seriously. Protect your keyboard or don’t blame me later. Unexpected Crossover Week continues with this mash-up of Lord of the Rings and rapper Jay-Z.
Seriously. Here’s the original:
(In the previous video, Leonard Nimoy is singing part of his Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. You see, this is how my mind works.)
Unexpected Crossover Week begins with an unexpectedly hilarious commercial for some automobile or other. Spock vs Spock. Like Mad Magazine’s Spy vs. Spy. In fact, I’m willing to bet that was the inspiration for this awesome work of art!
One last animated bar graph version of classical music. Mozart was known for the complexity of his pieces and you can really see them here. Musanim Week ends today. Tomorrow we begin Unexpected Crossover Week.
Musanim Week continues with the second of two Bach pieces, and a different sort of animation. These pieces are mesmerizing to me, Listening to the weaving of instruments as presented in a visual, colorful form, I don’t want to do anything else while they’re playing.
A new way to view music! I picked these up when someone posted one of these pieces randomly on my FB feed, and I spent the better part of a couple of hours wandering around the YouTube site finding more pieces, with music I liked. Toccata and Fugue in D minor has a warm, fuzzy spot in my heart. It’s been my cell ring tone for the better part of a decade.
These pieces are somewhat reminiscent of Disney’s Fantasia, my intro to the music. Trust animation to get these pieces of music implanted firmly in the minds of the young.
The end of Comedy Week comes with a surprise combination of Jimmy Fallon and Michelle Obama, possibly the coolest First Lady ever. There were a multitude of other comedy snippets I could have chosen – Carol Burnett is getting her own week a little later in the year, but this struck me as awesome and I didn’t want it to wait.
So sorry! I know you’ve been dying to see what was next, but I’ve been in the middle of a house move and now the internet and I are living in separate places. That will change soon, but in the meantime, here’s the entry for July 13. I’ll catch up on the rest in the next day or so. One more to go for Comedy Week…
